I must admit that when I get a tough question via email I do pretty much the same. No replies in my book means all recipients know you are right but won't support you.

perhaps you can dub the voices in, like the martial arts movie. But make sure the words are delayed......... so it looks as if they are talking but their mouths are shut.

Why do they always mix your vocals down?, in my mind it dosent sound like a true representation of you as a band if they are messing with the mix. Is it an ego thing from Terry?. I personally hope whoevers mixing it stays true too the live sound of the recent tour as I htought personally the live mix was just right. Theres nothing worse than an over produced heavily mixed "live" DVD from any band as it dosent sound real. I even like the odd bum note left in to give it real authenticity, not that I heard any bum notes the gigs I went too this year.

Well some of guys set out at the start of the re-union with the idear we had to sound just like we did note 4 note, level to level the same as we did on the first album.. which three weeks after we had recorded it we had changed thru playing it betta or finding more interesting ways of doin it. But they seem to think Specials fans are like teenboppers who need reasurance by hearing everything played like a C.D. at a school disco..

I think quite a few Specials fans would be quite happy for you to play that first LP note for note, over and over again...not realising how boring it would become performing night after night...

The thing is though, we all know that it 'sounds' the same, only better - you're all older, wiser (I hope!! ) more experienced musicians and it's really good to hear how it all fits together now, with richer sounds and slight variations - which is what we have heard through the tour. The fans want the sound of now, we all have the sound of 'back then', we love both - but we don't need a note for note repeat because it's better now. Thousands of fans have gone mad for you lot this year, nobody to my knowledge has said "it would have been better with less guitar or backing vocal in the mix" (or whatever). If a sound's being recorded on an assumption of what the listeners want, then the listeners should be consulted, surely?

I agree with you Shan.... Because unlike you lucky folks who got to hear the real thing live. Some of us will ever only get the recorded, remixed and revised to what 'they' think the listeners want.

Bob Dylan over the years has made slight re arrangements to his songs to the point that they are sometimes only recognisable by the lyrics, many of his fans are quite happy with it, others not so..Isn't this what Jerry wanted to do, re arrange the songs?

I liked it the way it was, I like it the it is & I'd like it the way it might of been.
whenever I go see UB40 (have not done so recently) the thing that always struck me was how close their live sound mirrored their recorded sound.
That was fine for UB40 I went to hear and see them and enjoyed every single gig.
When I see the Specials I don't expect it to sound like a recording or as it did in 1979 because it never did or could.
I expect it to sound like 7 (sometimes 10) musicians doing their stuff on stage.
I might not be able to express what I mean in words but I know what the Specials mean to me live and it aint a note for note rendition of the recorded sound
