BUT I THINK THAT BANDS/SINGERS SHOULD WRITE THEIR OWN MATERIAL UNLESS THEY CAN ADD TOO OR DO A COMPLETELY DIFFERANT VERSION OF AN EXISTING SONG THERES REALLY NOT MUCH POINT BOTHERING! I know what you mean as a few years ago I put out a tribute album to the 80s left wing skinhead band the Redskins. Off that album I'd say my favourite tracks were the ones done by American band The Old Bailey and Italina band Ned Ludd. Both bands changed the Redskins punk/soul sound into folk songs which worked really well. As for Specials covers I'd say that my favouWobbly Lime Jellye was 'Racist Friend' by the Upbeat off the Spareshells album. It has more of a ska/reggae feel to it then the Special AKA's version and I think this is how it would of sounded if the original line up of The Specials had ever released it. Was 'Racist Friend' ever planned as a single? As I know that uou played guitar on the demo version. I also love The Grooveblasters mix of 'Ghost Town', but that's a remix rather than a cover version.

Never really heard the Red Skins must get someone to burn me some* There's a couple of links between the Redskins and The Specials as Hampton Wick Cuthell produced a few of their songs and the Redskins second drummer Paul Hookham was in The Lemons who were signed to John Bradbury's Race Records. Also got a live bootleg somewhere which features Jerry Dammers playing keyboards on a few tracks. This is the very clip that got me into the Redskins. The first song 'Hold On' has a bit of a rockabilly feel to it but it was the second song 'Keep On Keepin' On' that go me into the band. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RVMVbBmj7MM

I remember Chris Dean- knew him in York. Chris is back in York these days. Shame he's done very little musically since the Redskins. I wonder if he still has Joe Strummers old telecaster?

kick over the statues was class. I've put the video of that single up on YouTube - uk.youtube.com/watch?v=yEZTZ3_cqHYThat single was part of the falling out between the band and their record label London/Decca. As the Redskins wanted to release the single around Xmas time with money from the single going to the ANC. London/Decca refused so the Redskins took a leaf out of Dexys book and stole the master tapes. But where Dexys just held the tapes the Redskins gave theirs to another record label who released the single!

I'd like to see the Specials cover the Stooges - Real Cool Time.
