Last night I went to see a local Ska covers band called Ska-Boom. The band were ok for a covers act and did a few Specials numbers, Bad Manners, Madness, Laurel Aitken's 'Sally Brown', Dexys 'Geno' and a few others like 'Last Night' and 'Pig Bag'. Nothing by The Beat or Selecter though.
But it was when the band were doing a cover of 'Rat Race' that I wondered if the songwriters ever get paid when a band covers one of their tunes at a gig? From running a record label I know that if I want to release a cover version I have to get in touch with MCPS to sort out any fees that need paying. But do tribute bands or cover bands have to pay when they play the song live? Or is it something that just gets overlooked?

For me 2tone had something special about it. I used to think i loved Ska but then i hate just about every Ska band since 2tone and all the covers bands so maybe i'm really just a 2tone fan.
Skaos from Germany were really good in the late 80's though.

There are a few good original Ska bands, but its like when punk turned into Oi it has lost a certain something?

Punk had already lost it before oi ! Oi took it over and gave it a new lease of life in my opinion !

John Jacobs played his best, most inventive stuff with the Villains, with whom he played 2Tone Ska and was influenced by John Bradbury.

Played with Skaboom from Leicester after the MK2 Specials disintergrated, did three tours of Ireland i think? A lot of heavy drinking i seem to recall.

There are a few good original Ska bands, but its like when punk turned into Oi it has lost a certain something? It has to be said, there wasn't much ska in the music of most 3rd wave ska bands, just an offbeat rhythm guitar and horns over standard US punk fare. Worth mentioning three notable exceptions, though: The Riffs, Pama Intl, and possibly the most authentic-sounding white band to play ska and reggae, the Aggrolites.

Saw alot of er.. slightly dodgy Ska/punk bands when the MK2 Shells toured the states in the 90,s.. they would sometimes put five support bands on before us,starting off terrible and getting slightly better towards our bit. But the crowd would be like a wet rag by the time we went on. Completely worn out.

You had just one ahead of you in Vancouver in '99?, and they were good. With Aitch, you did a great set and finished at a decent time.
