Hi Roddy
The Specials were around in probably the greatest period for UK music imo, Madness Dexy's Jam Pistols clash etc..... etc....
I was listening to the charts recently (a rare thing for me), and i think i counted probably one UK band (that i'd call a band and not "Fake that" type bands) in the entire top40.
Do you think we'll ever see another 77-82 period or is it all over and we'll just have to get used to living in real gangster times?

Also, why do you think most of the great bands from that era including yourselves all split so rapidly? leaving the rest of the80's to become synth pop hell.

I think every generation of teenagers have their golden period, its just age and change that stops us liking the bands of the moment. Ive mentioned on antoher thread that I never really had a period in my life where I liekd the music of my peers, the closest I got was around 89 - 91 when I liked rap and and abit of techno, but even then those bands were using the samples of the groups/ artists I loved more e.g James Brown was a favourite of mine and he was all over just about every record released in that period. I have a younger brotehr whos very much into the music of today and when I say that Im not that into it, he looks quite shocked as this he percieves to be his golden period and all music is good. I guess it will change as nothing ever lasts forever. Interesting point Roddy about middle class kids being in all the bands today, I genuinely cant think of aworking class band thats big now, the last I suppose was Oasis but that was 15 years ago when they broke through. Music has got very boring now, its all pomp and no substance, where are the bands struggling in garages writing angry tunes because they want too chnage things, weve too many Brian Eno produced stuff about now.

I think the problem i'm trying to point out is that when i turn on the radio, it seems to be filled with rap/dance boy/girl bands all the time. I know there are some great bands around out there somewhere, but why are they not getting played on the radio and filling the top40 like they always have done really since the 60's?
I'm struggling to think of any new UK band that gets regular airplay these days. and i mean a band probably 2 or 3 years old. Does a band have to be manufactured or produced on the X factor now to get airplay?

There are class acts out there but no one will ever hear them because the bizzness just wont take a chance, they just jump on each bandwagon and throw copyests at it until its dead.

I don't know I think it all changed in '77 and then we all basked in the reflected light until things driffted back to the way it was pre '77.
Something will happen again, I'm sure, but there can only ever be one "original" and those of us that were lucky enough to be into music and young in '77 were just so lucky.
I think the previous "gifted" generation were the rock n roll babes - it must have been good to have been in on that movement at the time - that really was the birth of modern music

It p*sses me right off just how manufactured some bands these days are, get a few all-rounders in for an aud*i*tion and if they can harmonise & look pretty they have a hit single - but they're forgotten in 6 months. There's a million hard working bands out there who should be given the chance to earn at least enough to do some promo and get a decent recording session done - talented, intelligent people and they get nowhere. A good few years ago, at least there was healthy compet*i*tion, not all model looks and nepotism... I know there's still some decent bands making it but the rest should be called the plastic music industry, cos they're an insult to the art
