I've met Wellers folks and there dyed in the wool tories through and through, his mum told me that she didn't know where Paul got his politics from . Let's face it no system works capatilism, socialism, communism as there's always greedy people out there. I thought The Housemartins did some good pop songs in the 80's which had some clever lyrics in them about greed etc etc.

My mum's a Thatcher hating anti-royalist whose friends burned Union Jacks from castle tops in Wales while she was enjoying the finest education Britain ever offered and graduating in the top of her class at Aberystwyth University. She definately didn't arrive at her perspective through ignorance. She has fond memories of the kids she taught at her first job in a high school in Hainault in the fifties, and she and her fellow teachers worked very hard to impress learning and education upon them. Many of those kids seemed tough until you met the parents.

You ony get a good education in this country if your rich. Everyone else has that knowledge (power) kept away from them. And then they start punishing youngsters for acting like idiots with knives or looking at them as if they're lower than themselves because they can't string a proper line of English together. I don't blame teachers, the goverment controls things. You reap what you sow - and they're gonna find that out (if they haven't already).

Never bought that one, but after London callin ild moved on.. Well "Sandanista" is a spralling mess. You could condense it down to a good single LP...Whose idea was it to do "Somebody Got Murdered" on "Today's Specials"?, I thought it might have been yours Roddy.

I always thought Weller was a Labour bloke. Im sure he did some stuff for the Labour Party in the 90s. But Roddy is right that Weller did say he'd vote conservative back in the 70s. He apparently said it after a tiff with The Clash over the White Riot tour. He was only a kid when he said it (18 or 19 ?) and I think he's regretted saying it ever since. I think his actions over the following 30 years have spoken louder than these words and clearly show his political stance. Also Joe gave his reply in the last verse of White Man in Hammersmith Palais.

Wouldn't exactly say it was a mess, works well as a double CD, while there are a couple of fillers, some of the other tracks are top notch (Up in Heaven, Washington Bullets, Police on My Back, Somebody...) and the crossover stuff such as Mag 7 was years ahead of everything else. I think they'd achieved their aim on London Calling by creating a fusion of several styles to come up with their own original rebel beat, and they ambitiously tried to top it with Sandinista and probably come unstuck due to a combination of smoking too much weed, and trying to have one over on the record company.

I like Sandinista, exspecially the Blockhead input - Davey's Saxamaphone, Norman onna base and Mickey on keys.

It depends on your taste I suppose. One man's Poison.ect......

Well "Somebody got murdered" reminded me of my tune "Reckless Romance" as the chorous had similar feel, and as some of the MK2,s insisted on a cover album at least i could get a Clash song in*
