Just seen Allingham's life story. he said " Im only here ( saying why he was still alive at 113) to be a reminder of those who never returned from the war. Im here for them not for any of you. You are here living life and enjoying it because of those men...."
Desperate Dan right.
PS You'll be right,Rod- only another 58 years to go ;D

Just seen it on the news, must have had a good life (apart from 1914 - 1918 & 1939-1945) and if that quote was by him then it was quality.
I for one am grateful for the sacrifices that he and all the countless others made so I have never had to see my friends and relatives die for some crack pot's ideas.

90% of my immediate family are more or less Eastenders and as a result suffered badly through the blitz.
I would probably have twice, three times the number of relatives I do had WW2 not happened - the really sad thing is that I am not unique the whole country can tell the same story.

Belive it or not, some of my relatives lived in Coventry (not during the war though) and I remember being shown the bomb damaged Cathederal as a kid and being told the story about Churchill letting Coventry be bombed in order to protect the new invention we had, called radar.
I don't know if the story is true or not I just remember being told it whilst we were visiting during the school hols.

if the story is true it does seem a strange logic to have an invention that has been built specifically to save lives then let people die so the Germans didn't know we had it.

if the story is true it does seem a strange logic to have an invention that has been built specifically to save lives then let people die so the Germans didn't know we had it. Sadly the secret services see the general populace as expendable when it comes to the secrecy of their war machines. There is a term that Andy Mcnabb said they use to describe us (I cant remember off the top of my head right now) and basically it puts us mortals up there with cattle. Its something along the lines as Collateral damage, which de humanises all those lives that they will be lost whilst trying to carry out a "black op" to fool the enemy. Going back to the Bombing of Coventry, my uncle whos now in his advanced 70s actually remembers recording the air raid on an old wax cylinder as a child, he lived in Birmingham but he said the noise and the flashes of lights could be seen and heard for miles. He kept that wax cylinder for years and it survived the rest of the war and the bombing of his own house, but was sadly destroyed by his daughter when she was little, the Germans couldnt destroy it with their heavy bombs, but a 2 year old little girl with a pair of pliers can do wonders. I used to work in Coventry afew years ago and used to get talking to alot of Polish people who moved to Cov in the 2nd world war and I heard some pretty horrific stories of what happened during those air raids, apparently on the site of the Round market about 200 people were killed on that spot and were just buried right there in unmarked graves. Im totally against war of any kind, I despair that we claim to be civilised yet still feel the need too bomb the bejeezus out of others and rob famillies of Sons, daughters, Mothers, Fathers.........it appals me, have we not learnt anything?. Did anyone here that song by Radiohead called "HARRY PATCH" that they released the day after the "last Tommy" died?, its haunting and if you download it from Radioheads website they donate the money to the British Legion. Worthwhile cause even if you dont like Radiohead. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vztj_TnUQyY"I am the only one that got through The others died where ever they fell It was an ambush They came up from all sides Give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves I've seen devils coming up from the ground I've seen hell upon this earth The next will be chemical but they will never learn"
