For years I have tried to quietly educate some people on not judging people on how they dress or the music that they listen to.
Well I can't call myself a rude girl, a skin, a punk, mod or a rockabilly. I can't classify myself to anything because I love all these music scenes. I have been at a rockabilly show educating my friend's friend about skinheads. He is an african man who thinks skinheads are white supremacy. He saw some folks who had short hair and automatically judged them. I have gone to oi shows only to deal with skins judging rockabillys as racist. I have just talked to a friend who is into ska saying oi music is fast and nonsense. I have asked him has he ever actually listened to the words. So I have groups of friends who are grouped into all these categories. My favorite rockabilly band called the Chop tops sends out that message and they then sing their version of 'Concrete Jungle.'
Is anyone out there who is open minded? Speak to me precious one.

Linda Ive never fitted in with any one scene, I am a punk, goth, ted, skin, rudie...etc, I have such a wide taste in music that I cant class myself as anything, I am what I am listening too right at that moment. I have recently started having a close cropped crew cut after many years of having a messed up punk style haircut and that has jogged afew memories of people thinking I must be far right and racist and having to put up with all the funny stares that go with it. I was at a UB40 gig the other night and I over heard someone say to their friend "whats a skinhead doing here?" albeit the kid was quite young and probably dosent know about the non racist skin element that loved reggae and ska back in the day, but I was glad to hear his friend? dad? say. " No son hes alright, hes wearing a Specials t shirt". I wouldnt worry about it linda, Ive travelled around this country and Europe seeing bands of all different genres and for the most part Ive met some wonderful people and have made some very good friends along the way and not one of them judges another by what hes wearing or into outside of their clique. Rock and roll unites us all.

Ive had 30 years of antagonism towards me as Ive alwayys been part of Skinhead.I love the music,I love the style and I love the people. The massive majority are very good people who would do anything dfor you- unfortunately the media and the old stereotype of the racist always spring to peoples minds. Its all Nadgers. I wont apologise for being one, never will.I am what I am and if it upsets people then thats tough, they can Arnold Chicken Shorts off.I wouldnt want to know anyone who judges like that.Ive been to many many gigs over the years and Ive had times when Ive been approached by black lads and we have discussed the skinhead connnection to black music and they didnt know any of it and were surprised. Unfortunately, the American angle on SKinheads seems to be more widespread as white supremacy-theyve taken the old bonehead image and exploded it across the country as a "skinhead" in general.I saw the American Skinheads doBanana Milkshakeentary on Discovery channel the other night and it was the biggest pile of crap Ive ever seen. Like Mr Claypole says Ive met loads of great people and not one gives a s-h-i-t about my lifestyle-they judge me as me.

anyone who is/was a skinhead will know exactaly what you mean Paul.
Even though I no longer dress in that fashion when people hear that you used to be a skinhead they always adopt the same sterotypical view they always have done.

I don't like Goth fashion, but I don't denigrate those that do.
And for those that are into Goth, denigrate means to put down.

Yes the American skins are different from the UK. But there are some that dress the style but don't know the lifestyle if you get what I mean. There are lots of those in the mid states.
Lots of the skins here hate the whole rockabilly and really loathe the psychobilly stuff. They say they are all racist, how is that so when most of them are Hispanics and one Asian. haa haa.. ummm..
But the thing with ska loving rudies, they think oi music is loud and none sense. Got into a tiff with my buddy who is into ska. My thing is lots of every music is nonsense, but you gotta give it a listen first before you can deem it nonsense. Lots of those new bands out there calling themselves ska sounds like s h i t-
I do admire the skins, the real ones. I have seen some of them always keeping to the code and keeping it real. You see them when they are young dressed in that style and they are still doing so now.

We as a nation, produced the cult that is generaly taken to be skinheads, everywhere it's been exported (adopted) to has taken the parts of the movement they want and then used that element to mean what they want it to mean.
Most of us over here who were involved in the early days of the movement are amazed at what it means to everyone else in the world.
that is not to deny the things that skinheads have done in their time but the majority of what I have ever read about skinheads makes it look a really evil movement that is only for the dregs of society. That was not my experience of the movement.
I guess what I am saying is that over the years it's been hijacked by various people who have used it to promote their particular brand of eveilnes. so all skinheads get tarred with the same brush

Linda - I have good friends that fit into lots of subcultures - someone asked me recently if my husband is a "skin too" - I had to say that Patrick doesn't identify with any one subculture - although he has a #2 blade and I met him at a ska gig - he rarely goes to gigs and is really selective when he does - this year he's been to the Specials and UK Subs. That's it. They were the only 2 things that he wanted to come to this year. And to be honest - between 1980 and now I've been many things - but my passion remains ska/2tone etc. I think people who stereotype and don't understand crossover of subcultures pretty unintelligent and as Paul Willo said I agree - I wouldn't want to be friends with people that judgemental.....I hope your friends see the light! Life is too short! Enjoy Yourself - it's later than you think Pauline Black has just released her album that is not ska - but if ska fans don't love it because the lady has an awesome voice and is a great entertainer - then they're mad in my humble opinion!

yeah, i shouldn't be friends with people who are judgmental but if that is the case, i would have no friends at all. Everyone is judgmental in something or another. The thing is you gotta stay friends with these folks, you slowly worm your influences into them. ;D
but loonie at least you got a husband who has good taste in music. the last guy i was married to, was a rolling stones freak and the red hot chilli peppers nut. i can't listen to the red hot chili peppers without thinking of my life with him. argh!!
pauline's voice is quite lovely in whatever she sings.
