From what I've heard and read down the years, it's obvious that Jerry isn't the easiest person to work with. I'm sure he can be a pain in the...BUT I can understand him being precious about it, much of the success of the band was down to him and his ideas. And I'm sure he only wants to do it if it's done right. Let's face it, when the Specials reformed without him and Terry in the 90s, it lacked creativity and originality and for that to happen again would be a disaster. It shouldn't be done without some serious thought and some new songs or ideas. The Specials deserve better.

The Specials reunion has been rumbling along now for 4 years and the arguments are all still the same. Yes true-The Specials were never about money but who are we to say that they shouldnt be rewarded for their efforts? if people are to be so offended by the group making dosh from a reunion then dont buy the new CD and dvd, dont go to the shows -its up to you(pardon the pun) If something the scale of 2Tone was around nowadays then all involved would be millionaires of that you can be sure.Look at the bags of Hong Kong Phoey about today-i mean are girls aloud worthy of being millionairesses??? what is their contribution to society? The Specials and 2Tone tried to change peoples views and minds and gave us something to dance to and it was a purely brilliant time. Lets remember- the band was 7 very different individuals with individual approaches and ideas, conflict was always gonna rise-and the bands edginess is what made them such an electric live act but - the incessant touring, heavy drinking and other matters all took their toll.In Horaces book he mentioned that some band members were getting carried away with the Specials success which changed their personalities. They drifted apart-even Rick Rogers wished he could have managed them far far better than he did- People talk about a massive conflict between Rod and Jerry but it wasnt like as bad as people make out.Jerry was becoming ill through it all, there are so many factors that contributed to the group imploding. Dont forget, Roddy found out he was to be axed after being told by Lynval who had given him a lift home back in 81- everything was Arnold Chicken Shortsed up.communication had broken down and it was too late to salvage the group. It just so happened that when it went Strawberry Sauces up,they were at Number One in the charts.Terry,Neville and Lynval must have felt it was time to go or they wouldnt have. They must have realised that the Fun Boy 3 were never gonna match anything The Specials did by a long chalk so leaving was a huge desperate gamble??? I dunno- none of us do. All the band members share in the blame for the group's demise but i can see Jerrys problem- his brainchild crumbled before him. I can see Dammers' point of view about the current Specials reunion and why he wants it doing his way but surely a [glow=red,2,300] common ground needs to be found to work with the other 6 lads[/glow]. also,as much as I am an admirer of Terry,he did spend almost 20 years tearing The Specials apart in interviews and stuff. So questions could be asked about his motives. Inwardly scars must still exist whether time has passed or not. For us on the outside its easy to judge but the band have had legal matters in the past between them and that must cause friction so it must be hard for those involved to get things thrashed out. Its well known that in the past the only time Jerry has spoken to some of the rest of the band is through solicitors. All that aside, the lads know that they have to be 110% spot on if they reform otherwise the media would rip them apart. The 2Tone legacy is still a huge aspect to live up to. There are also one or two "outsiders" that are preventing this reunion moving forward simply, no-marks wanting a slice of that coveted Specials pie. I for one have no problem with the band going out and making money, let em earn a good pension they deserve it and maybe they can re-awake the Anti racism theme in music again and help the UK Ska scene and its' bands at the same time.. They can still cut it- Rod has never stopped performing, Nev(although Nev is in a quandry cos should he play with the Specials -what happens to his own solo show??? saying that it must be better to be in The Specials and playing seriously than playing support to The Beat )Terry and Lynval are still active and although Horace has been unwell over the last few years it doesnt stop his enthusiasm.I assume Brad would be back to his best at that superb drumming he is famous for, and Jerry still has it .I hear there may be plans to include Rico which would be fantastic but I heard that Hampton Wick Cuthell is unwell so i dont know what would happen there. So once the little men shut up the lads could get together and thrash it out. Forget about what went on before, its now we are talking about. The time for them to strike is NOW-and leads perfectly into the 2Tone 30th anniversary next year. They were such a definitive group- fantastic songwriters in Jerry and roddy - they affected me for life. I was the first to make a biographical account of the group, and have pushed and promoted the band and 2Tone over all these years- I love it. I wish them well wether Jerry is involved or not -I just hope he is not cutting off his nose to spite his face. I wanna hear Roddys guitar tear up "Concrete Jungle" one more time!!!!!!!!

Nice one Willo! maybe you oughta answer my questions for me? Funny i didnt mind the idear od working with Dammers again, it was Lynval,Horace and Terry that didnt relish the idear. I just thought it couldnt be any worse than the family problems ive been having for the last few years. But i wouldnt like to have to hide in a bottle of Jack again- mes not a genie no more..

hi Stu, yes but you got to remember those days were not partically happy days for i think nearly all the band, so to put ourselves back in harness has a certain amount of forboding to it. Musically i think we could do it - physically some of us would have to be careful - mentally, well who knows - that thing about madness and genius being close together..

Cheers Stu, yeah Ive all the passion in the world.Im 41 and when i hear stuff like Concrete Jungle and Too Much Too Young plus many others i get goose pimples even now. Well put Rod- yer hit the nail square on its head mate- We werent there behind closed doors and to go back to what was a manic band at that time must be daunting and like you say phsically itll be ok,musically its adone deal but mentally thats the big one.It seems that the majority are willing to take that risk and to be fair-good on them, but if its possible- Get it on. Go and get what you all deserve- I'll do every fookin show! ;D

Been following this thread with some interest. I'm an ex-Cov lad living now in Hong Kong and have followed the various incarnations of the Specials since the start.

OK, well I have just checked that my last post went through, so here goes with a longer one.
I've met both Lynval and Nev a couple of times as I used to live in Earlsdon. In fact I popped into Nev's gaff when he was living over in Huntingdon Beach, LA. I've got to say they are superb blokes and I've got every respect for both of them.
I've never met the General so what I am going to say might sound a tad unfair. However, I've read many of his comments/interviews and I have to say I think he is a complete twot.
Jerry's dad was apparently the chief vicar at Cov cathedral (not sure what the proper name is for a chief vicar). Anyway, I reckon Jerry must be a chip off the old block because he never stops with his f***ing sermons. Always going on about oil, war, racism blah blah.
Personally, I'm pretty left-wing as well but I don't go on and on and on and on about it like Jerry does, forcing his opinions on everyone else. And I don't think it's a crime to make lots of money through hard work.
I heard a story about how, when the Specials were famous, he refused a limo that the record company had arranged to pick them up. Fine if he wanted to arrange his own transport, but what about all the others who might have fancied a taste of "fame". I know it would have really annoyed me if someone told me what kind of car I was allowed to travel in.
The problem with Jerry is that he just can't stop lecturing people with his holier-than-thou type atStrawberry Sauceude, or should I say his "more socialist than you" type atStrawberry Sauceude.
Anyway, now I've got that off my chest, I really hope that the reunion works out. I'm just praying that it is any time other than Oct-Dec because that would be a nightmare to get away from work.
Roddy - is there any chance the tour would go global? How long would a tour be likely to go on for?
I saw the Police recently in Macau and I reckon the Specials would knock them for six.

Stink is in pretty phenomenal shape however, and the rigours of touring might prove difficult for the Specials who only did it briefly when they were still in their twenties.
